0-1 In a crowded marketplace farmers and middlemen display a great variety of products. A hand holding a roll of paper or parchment. A man and woman standing face to face, their hands clasped. A satyr sitting on a rock by a river which is running into the sea, holding a fish.
1-2 A squirrel hiding from hunters. A very long ladder, such as is used by fire brigades. A chest floating on an open sea. An old man sitting beneath a leafless tree with bread in his hand and a bag of money by his side.
2-3 Petrified tree trunks lie broken on desert sand. A luminous cloud, one of the woolpack type, isolated and sailing slowly on the azure sky. The cloud suddenly opens and pours out on
the earth an influence resembling a shower of pearls of variegated hue.
A boar’s head upon a dish. The deck of a trawler on which are quantities of fish. It is night, a small cottage is on fire on the land, and this, with the shore lights, is reflected in the water.
3-4 Heavy car traffic on a narrow isthmus linking two seashore resorts. A man holding the end of a rope in his hand, the other end out of sight in the heavens. A trilithon consisting of two strong pillars of stone with a horizontal thwart of the same
material. Within the trilithon is a strong iron gate.
A lighthouse built on rocks in the midst of an angry sea. Over the sky is a rainbow.
4-5 A church bazaar. A black pall suspended, and a man in a gloomy enclosure looking at it despairingly; finally he musters courage to lift the pall, and enters a dark passage, which, however, finally conducts him into the light of glorious day. Three men advancing arm in arm. The interior of a tent of a Roman military commander, in which is a table set with abundance of food and drink in rich vessels of gold and silver.
5-6 A parade of army officers in full dress. A target. A wreck floating on a peaceful sea. Pirates tying a captive to a tree by the seashore. An old sailor hidden behind the rocks and foliage watching and waiting, knife in hand, to set him free.
6-7 Illumined by a shaft of light, a large cross lies on rocks surrounded by sea. An extensive plain on which a dense fog hangs, but the fog is low and there is sunshine above. A niche in which are set a lamp and a book or missal. Two wrestlers struggling for mastery. One is dark and evil-looking, whilst the other is as an angel in manly beauty.
7-8 A girl playing a bugle. The full Moon. A man with upraised arms submerged in the water, over which a heavy rain is falling. A slave-merchant selling a beautiful woman in an Eastern market-place.
8-9 A jockey spurs his horse, intent on outdistancing his rivals. A deep red star, a star of the first magnitude, on the ascendant; but a very short interval elapses between its rising and its setting. But when set, I see a pale goldenlight succeeding. An old man with a pack upon his back and a long staff in his hand walking down a hill. Venus and Cupid, metamorphosed as two fishes, swimming from a giant who stands on a rock.
9-10 An aviator pursues his journey, flying through ground-obscuring clouds. A fixed star. A transcendental Sun. It sheds a halo of supernal glory on the ascendant. On a table of plain surface lie a number of chemical instruments, a retort, a pestle and mortar, a bent tube, and a crucible being
the chief.
A man sweeping together quicksilver which has fallen from a dish and has scattered in all directions.
10-11 Men traveling a narrow path, seeking illumination. The ascendant enveloped in gloom and blackness. A wild horse leaping a barrier. A dog running amongst some children playing on the seashore.
11-12 In the sanctuary of an occult brotherhood, newly initiated members are being examined and their character tested. A very large disk consisting of circles of light with dark gray interspaces. These circles
resemble wheels within wheels, which I find on closer examination to be spiral, all revolving.
A truncated cone. An author with his head in his hands, a rejected manuscript and a lady’s photograph on a table before him.
12-13 An ancient sword, used in many battles, is displayed in a museum. There is no symbol for this degree. A circle within a circle, both concentric. A man crossing a bog on an old tree which has long ago fallen.
13-14 A lady wrapped in a large stole of fox fur. A field of ripe corn ready for the sickle. A cloudless sky and a brilliant sunshine A man stripped to the waist hewing timber. A number of stevedores loading a ship at a port.
14-15 An officer instructing his men before a simulated assault under a barrage of live shells.
A hand with a sword in it. Just rising in the ascendant, a halo of golden light envelopes it. That sword is not for indiscriminate slaughter. It is to defend the right. An arrow in flight passing through a cloud of smoke. A man standing on a high look-out, nervously scanning the horizon at high noon, a comrade falling at his side stricken by the aim.
15-16 In the quiet of his study a creative individual experiences a flow of inspiration. Two swords crossing each other. A tiger standing guard over its young litter. A hawk with outspread wings standing on a trumpet.
16-17 An Easter parade. A man with two horses ploughing. A man falling with upraised arms between the parting timbers of a broken bridge. A gaudily dressed officer holding aloft a spear of gold.
17-18 In a gigantic tent, villagers witness a spectacular performance A military officer mounted on a fine-looking charger, with sword in hand, on the top of a hill as if on the look-out. A horse and its rider falling at a fence. A spider seizing a fly caught in the web.
18-19 A master instructing his disciple. A man lying in a bed, a gray dark cloud hanging over him. His chamber is also dark and gloomy. Yet the horizon looks bright. Two daggers crossed. A sick man lying at the base of a large stone cross, a greyhound running in the distance.
19-20 A table set for an evening meal. An angel blowing a trumpet. A helical scroll. An itinerant musician playing the mandolin and singing love-songs to a number of country maidens who are seated on rocks and fallen trees around him.
20-21 Under the watchful and kind eye of a Chinese servant, a girl fondles a little white lamb. A man walking in darkness with an
old-fashioned lantern in his hand.
A lunar crescent emerging from a cloud from which also proceeds a flash of lightning. A staff adorned with colored ribbons, standing in a field of violets, butterflies circling around it.
21-22 A prophet carrying tablets of the new law is walking down the slopes of Mount Sinai. A man sitting at a table with a carving knife in hand, about to carve a round of beef which lies before him. A woman of dark countenance standing over a prostrate man. A snake hidden in a bush of wildflowers near a bubbling stream.
22-23 A "materializing" medium giving a sťance. A column of smoke ascending on a gigantic scale, followed by a terrible burst of flame. The phenomenon partakes of the character of an explosion. A warrior in helmet drawing a long bow which the fletch is duly set. A heap of broken arms and military trappings lying in a muddy pool.
23-24 On a small island surrounded by the vast expanse of the sea, people are seen living in close interaction. One not capable of being described in words, but the signification is a person who will
possess great magnetic powers; also, one who will, in his day, do much by way of destroying popularized evils – a reformer, a healer, and a philanthropist.
A woman reclining upon a couch, scantily attired. A giant ape dragging a woman into the forests.
24-25 A religious organization succeeds in overcoming the corrupting influence of perverted practices and materialized ideals. A very large field of corn; a great number of a reapers, but a very few sheaves. A crown through which is set an upright sword. An unfurled flag on a shaft of forked lightning.
25-26 Watching the very thin moon crescent appearing at sunset, different people realize that the time has come to go ahead with their different projects. A very high flagstaff, with a red flag floating on the top. A man in armor, fully equipped and bearing a shield. A dowser, with a wand of hazel in his hands, finding water on barren lands.
26-27 The harvest moon illumines a clear autumnal sky. This is an occult degree. An earthquake. A horse running, with flames issuing from his nostrils.
27-28 A fertile garden under the full moon reveals a variety of full-grown vegetables. A triangle with a round hole in the center. A serpent standing erect within a circle of fire. A black cat sitting on an old parchment-covered book.
28-29 Light breaking into many colours as it passes through a prism. An old-fashioned clock. A man upon a raft floating in open sea. A bat flying at night in an old graveyard.
29-30 A majestic rock formation resembling a face is idealized by a boy who takes it as his ideal of greatness, and as he grows up, begins to look like it . . . Two men striving to hold a mad bull with ropes about his head. A sraight column with square capital and base. A man trudging along a rough road, dragging a mass of heavy chains. A strong horse in a cart standing idly near.
