0-1 In a collection of perfect specimens of many biological forms, a butterfly displays the beauty of its wings, its body impaled by a fine dart. A four square figure, thus □. A man with a drawn sword in an aggressive attitude. A lion with his paw on a heart, above a square.
1-2 The transmutation of the fruits of past experiences into the seed- realizations of the forever creative spirit. A man playing on a violin. A man in the garb of a doctor of the monastic order (misericordia). A gold-covered book, on which is cut a Crux ansata crowned, floating in the misty air.
2-3 The dawn of a new day reveals everything changed.
A long pole suspended horizontally in mid-air with a rope attached to each end connected with the earth. A man in chains. A young girl striving to escape from immaterial, but visible, cords which surround her; the more she struggles the more they increase.
3-4 Around a campfire a group of young people sit in spiritual communion. A man with a knife in his hand. A man with a broken plough standing in an open field. A broken wedding-ring lying on a table.
4-5 A man revealing to his students the foundation of an inner knowledge upon which a "new world" could be built. A man feeling his way over a bog, where he appears to be sinking at every step he takes. A red triangle. A naked arm and hand, from which blood is flowing. Above, a sword.
5-6 A man watches his ideals taking a concrete form before his inner vision. An old-fashioned signboard suspended from the branch of a tree before an ancient looking wayside inn. A heifer drawing a plough, and urged by the goad. A traction engine traveling along a newly made road in very charming country.
6-7 A woman feeding chickens and protecting them from the hawks. An angel standing in mid-air, with a long scroll in his hand, unfolded. This scroll is covered with writing. A naked man in the act of falling from a rock into a lake. A winged globe on the back of a sporting dolphin.
7-8 A blazing fireplace in a deserted home. A figure resembling what is called "the true lover's knot." A young maiden weeping over a grave. A group of people standing dejectedly outside the closed doors of a big financial institution.
8-9 Three "old masters" hanging on the wall of a special room in an art gallery. A man standing on the top of a high mountain; on the one side a perpendicular rock; he is standing near this precipice with a red flag in his hand, which he is waving by way of signalling a promiscuous crowd, who, appear to be rushing on horseback at a gallop towards this rock. A gladiator, armed with dagger and shield, ready for the fray. A large pair of scales. Two men quarrelling behind.
9-10 Having passed through narrow rapids, a canoe reaches calm waters. A lovely garden of flowers. A prison door, fitted with iron spikes, and framed with iron girders. An old hermit, in a cave, grasping a crucifix.
10-11 A professor peering over his glasses at his students. An ancient shepherd with crook in hand, standing in the midst of his flock. A centaur – half man, half horse – armed with bow and arrow. A crow with a larger rat in its beak.
11-12 Miners are surfacing from a deep coal mine. A man with a bow in his hand; but he has no arrow. A fair woman looking at her face in a hand-glass. A man falling from an insecure and broken bridge into a dark pit below.
12-13 Children blowing soap bubbles. A man with his arm in a sling, and his head bandaged. A pillar of black marble standing upon a rock, roughly hewn. A woman in a dark blue costume entering a convent door; her head is erect, her arms raised, and she heeds not a handsome cavalier who is offering her fruits and flowers.
13-14 In the heat of the noon hour a man takes a siesta. An innocent-looking woman with fair hair; rather tall; she appears restless. I see a very dark-looking being behind her back. A mummer's mask. A brilliantly plumaged peacock strutting towards a wall, behind which are two men unwinding a net.
14-15 Circular paths. A fat pig lying down. A man walking with two women, their arms linked in his. A man who has just left the banquet table in a dazed condition, holding his hand to his head as if trying to remember something.
15-16 After a storm a boat landing stands in need of reconstruction. A soldier, going through his drill. An iceberg, at the back of which is seen a display of the aurora borealis. A large hole out of which gases are rising. A number of birds seeking to cross are overcome by the fumes and are falling into the gap, over which only one has passed safely.
16-17 A retired sea captain watches ships entering and leaving the harbor. A horse saddled and bridled, and galloping away without a rider. An old door in which a dagger is stuck. A beautifully formed foot rising from a haze of color-waves.
17-18 Two men placed under arrest. A man at a desk writing all kinds of hands, from the largest hand to the most microscopic. A well-lighted house with open door. A fireman rescuing a little child from a burning house.
18-19 A gang of robbers in hiding. A man on the tread-mill. A square block of marble, upon which is the regalia of sceptre and crown. A lion rising from the blood of a wounded soldier.
19-20 A rabbi performing his duties. The sun shining brightly. A man in the robe of a priest standing in the cloister beneath the light of a window. A young girl amidst the flowers in the sunlight wearing a garland of roses and weaving others.
20-21 A Sunday crowd enjoying the beach. A cross formed of darts, that is, having a barbed termination to each arm. A bridge in a broken dilapidated condition spanning over the dry bed of a river. A flashily dressed woman singing, with a glass of wine raised in her right hand. On one side of her is the spirit of Mirth, on the other the spirit of Sorrow.
21-22 A child giving birds a drink at a fountain. The open Bible with a sword on it. A man asleep by the side of some money bags. A youth searching for a jeweled ring which he has on his finger.
22-23 Chanticleer's voice heralds sunrise. The clear blue sky covered with stars. An old man in a gown and skull cap like a doctor surrounded by chemical and other instruments. A pair of compasses lying on a map of the world.
23-24 A butterfly with a third wing on its left side. A big man. He resembles a giant, but the lower limbs look black; this appears to creep upwards. A solitary tree upon a rocky height, behind which is a dark and threatening cloud. A whirlwind scattering a mass of papers into the air.
24-25 The sight of an autumn leaf brings to a pilgrim the sudden revelation of the mystery of life and death. A Welsh harp. An elevated promontory, illumined by the noonday sun and crowned with many and variously coloured flowers. A woman naked standing on a crescent moon, the stars glittering behind her in a sky of blue.
25-26 An eagle and a large white dove change into each other. A heron. A strong man mailed and plumed, with lance, ready for attack: a knight of the field. A successful candidate for Parliament addressing the people after an election.
26-27 An airplane sails, high in the clear sky. A rhinoceros. A rustic cottage, overarched by a spreading cedar tree. The moon throwing its beams on a little bush hut amidst forest trees. A storm has just passed.
27-28 A man becoming aware of spiritual forces surrounding and assisting him. A man with a crown on his head, and a spear in his hand. An ass tethered to the shaft of a grinding mill. A mass of quartz through which veins of fine gold can be traced.
28-29 Mankind's vast and enduring effort to reach for knowledge transferable from generation to generation. A woman standing on the head of a serpent. A dark pool of water in the shadow of dense foliage. An eclipse of the sun.
29-30 Three mounds of knowledge on a philosopher's head. A raven standing on a stone. A man sleeping upon a bundle of clothes. Over him hovers a vulture, while upon one side of him is a serpent ready to strike and on the other a leopard in the act of springing. A boy moping over his book in a schoolroom.
