1-2 White-capped waves display the power of wind over sea. A stupendous waterfall. A man lying upon a heap of stones by the roadside. A woman of angry countenance holding a dagger in her hand.
2-3 Two men playing chess. A man at a table with drawing instruments and paper before him. The Goddess of Mercy enthroned. A man of scornful face with a big sword in one hand, carrying a child.
3-4 A little child learning to walk with the encouragement of his parents. A man walking on the edge of a precipice. A soldier, holding a crossbow stands behind an embrasure. Two arrows crossed and surrounded by zones of glistening violet light.
4-5 An old owl sits alone on the branch of a large tree. A female with the lyre in her hand. A man of middle age watching over a cradle. A dark bank of clouds passing in front of the sun, cutting its rays from the earth.
5-6 A game of cricket. A man viewing himself in a looking glass. A mill-wheel drive, by the wind. A man in a black robe carrying a black rod on the top of which is a hand, the thumb held beneath the fingers of Jupiter and Saturn, whilst the fingers of the Sun and Mercury are pointing upwards.
6-7 Cupid knocks at the door of a human heart. A lady sitting on a divan fanning herself. A group of cattle browsing in the sunshine. A large ship on a calm sea in a dark, starless night, a black bird of the raven order sitting on the mainmast top.
7-8 Within the depths of the earth new elements are being formed. A man, stripped to the shirt, with sleeves up, and wheeling a barrow along a plank. Two men playing cards together. Draught horse pulling a load of chains up a hill, at the top of which is a great revolving wheel.
8-9 A mother leads her small child step by step up a steep stairway. A man standing on a platform and an audience in front. A house on fire. A burning oil-well into which men are pouring quantities of water.
9-10 A theatrical representation of a golden-haired goddess of opportunity. Cross-swords. A full moon shining in a clear sky. A large metallic ball reflecting various colors.
10-11 In the left section of an archaic temple, a lamp burns in a container shaped like a human body. A lion standing alone with tail erect and in the act of running towards a panther. A tiger crouching as in the act of assault. A fisherman with a net over his shoulder sitting on a basket, a group of people advancing towards him.
11-12 A flag turns into an eagle; the eagle into a chanticleer saluting the dawn. An apple tree whose boughs are bending with ripe fruit. A fair woman sporting herself on a couch. A coiled serpent, above which is a grinning skull.
12-13 A widow's past is brought to light. Death, with a scythe in one hand, and a bag of money in the other. A large portcullis guarding the entrance to a prison. An archer, with blood-stained dress, shooting at a stag.
13-14 The great pyramid and the sphinx. A magician in his sacerdotal vestments, standing in a magic circle, performing some magic rites. A quantity of books and papers in disorder. A human eye surrounded by a circle of flames.
14-15 The ground hog looking for its shadow on ground hog day. A large telescope pointing heavenwards. An arrow in mid-air. A painter at his easel in a forest upland, observing not the heavy black clouds which betray an approaching storm.
15-16 Sea gulls fly around a ship in expectation of food. A person about entering a dark tunnel. A black hole or cavern in a rock. A woman outside an old ruin under a starlit sky, a white angel on her right, a dark angel on her left. The stars — the lamps outside the palaces of the Holy Ones — are shining.
16-17 An Easter sunrise service draws a large crowd. A ploughman engaged in the act of ploughing. A man afloat upon a raft. Cupid holding a broken arrow in his right hand and a miniature anchor in his left.
17-18 Children playing on the beach, their heads protected by sunbonnets. A man in a boat on a lake. A man’s face painted with grotesque scrolls, and surrounded by a mass of tangled hair. A horse’s hoof winged, crushing a butterfly.
18-19 Pelicans menaced by the behaviour and refuse of men seek safer areas for bringing up their young. A boy in a state of nudity blowing bubbles. A serpent surrounded by a circle of fire. A wand divided by a star.
19-20 In an old-fashioned northern village men cut the ice of a frozen pond for use during the summer. A man in the act of distributing papers among a multitude of people. A garden of many hued flowers. A pleasure-boat on a picturesque river.
20-21 A child and a dog wearing borrowed eyeglasses. A wooden bridge over a chasm, a man at the end hesitating to trust himself on it. Two triangles interlaced, with a third superposed. A giant tidal wave.
21-22 A Chinese laundry. A May-pole with a crown of flowers at the top and a man climbing to procure it. Two arrows crossed. A dog on a wall baying at the moon.
22-23 A group of immigrants as they fulfil the requirements of entrance into the new country. A person at the bottom of a deep ravine, with lamp in hand looking for something. A human heart encircled with a band of iron and pierced by a dagger with jeweled hilt. A bee stinging a roaring lion.
23-24 A bluebird perched on the gate of a cottage. A ship in full sail in the midst of the ocean. A broken tree struck by a lightning flash. A bag of gold money falling into the ocean.
24-25 A chubby boy on a hobby-horse. A man in a balloon with the dark clouds beneath him. Three cups of wine standing upon a table in the form of a triangle. A ruined castle by a waterfall, near which is a naked woman holding a bunch of grapes to an old philosopher who, seated on a rock, is studying a manuscript.
25-26 A flag bearer in a battle. A giant of monstrous dimensions. A mask representing the face of a hound. Two girls on a see-saw gaily dressed, a man in motley in the center holding a cup of wine in his hand.
26-27 A sculptor at his work. A beautiful star of the color and size of the planet Venus, situated about 50 deg from the
mid-heaven; it shines brighter and brighter, then suddenly disappears.
A man beneath the paw of a lion rampant. Mercury holding up his caduceus in his right hand and with his left helping a fallen man to rise.
27-28 An old bridge over a beautiful stream is still in constant use. A funeral procession and an open grave, and a great concourse of People; great excitement. A tortoise. A simply dressed woman breaking a sword over her knee. In the heavens above masses of dark clouds are scudding before the rising Sun.
28-29 A fat boy mowing the lawn of his house on an elegant suburban street. A dissecting room, where are a number of medical men engaged in a post-mortem examination. A hare. A chariot, decorated with garlands of flower broken down on the roadway.
29-30 The pope blessing the faithful. A man standing alone in a dark and gloomy valley, and a ray of brilliant light coming direct from the heavens on the crown of his head. A spade protruding from the soil. A shield, with a gorgon’s head embossed on it, attached to a column.
