0-1 On a ship the sailors lower an old flag and raise a new one. A large clock with weights in sight, suspended from a high place, on which I see a large dial-plate, with hours and hands complete. A well-fruited vine hanging upon an old wall beneath the sunshine of a summer day. A curious ring set with a large heart of white onyx.
1-2 A man on a magic carpet hovers over a large area of land. A man in a green-house, with a watering-can, watering some flowering shrubs. A dog standing over a bare bone; in front of it are two others half starved. A laborer leaning against a tree watching a number of others digging in a neighboring field.
2-3 A man bundled in fur leads a shaggy deer. A deep shaft descending into the earth, and right overhead a balloon. A woman seated in an attitude of grief, her clothes disordered and her hair unkempt, holding some faded flowers in her hands; among the flowers are lilies and roses. A creeping plant — worms eating at the root — growing over a rustic summer-house.
3-4 A cat arguing with a mouse. I see that side of the Moon which is never seen by the inhabitants of this planet. A well-appointed table, with the remnants of a feast lying upon it. A drunken reveler in fancy costume asleep at a table, the contents of his overturned cup of red wine
pouring on to the floor.
4-5 At a railroad crossing, an automobile is wrecked by a train. A person holding up a scale in his hand, with even beam. A young tree or sapling, bent about the middle, and thence growing awry. A man seated on a rock on a newly boomed gold field, a new pick and shovel beside him, looking
gloomily at a newspaper containing reports of rich finds in the locality.
5-6 Game birds feathering their nests.
A large tract of land mapped out and enclosed with posts and rails, intended for a farm and homestead in the near future. A woman clothed in gaudy apparel, plays with some jewels in her lap. A man spending money lavishly entertaining his friends, a clown hidden behind a curtain laughing at
him.
6-7 Two nature spirits dancing under the moonlight. I see one large, ripe, nicely-tinted apple suspended from a bough. There is but this one on the tree. An iron gauntlet, a sword, and a scourge lying together upon the stump of a tree. An antique, gold-capped Corinthian column of white marble, slightly crumbling at its base.
7-8 A group of rabbits dressed in human clothes walk as if on parade. A man pulling at a rope attached to a bell which is supended near the top of a high tree. A dove lies upon the ground, while over it a snake is posed an attitude of attack. A newspaper editor at his desk — a mass of proofs before him — parleying with a man who averts his
face.
8-9 A small naked girl bends over a pond trying to catch a fish. A spider in the corner of a room intently watching the giddy dance of silly flies, as they heedlessly approach the confines of his dominions. A little village lying in a fertile valley. An acrobat performing before a large audience.
9-10 A large diamond in the first stages of the cutting process. A bulbous plant, just pushing its way upward from beneath the sod, and beginning to unfold itself in order to show forth its beauties. A wide-spreading oak tree, around the roots of which are many young shoots, while the birds of the season sing among its branches. A painter at his easel in a graceful forest glade. It is the hour of sunset, and strange shadows of unearthly
grandeur are falling.
10-11 A clown caricaturing well-known personalities. A young girl playing on a lyre. A stranded vessel on a low, sandy beach. A number of maidens, crowned with garlands of wildflowers, dancing on a green lawn.
11-12 A Chinese woman nursing a baby whose aura reveals him to be the reincarnation of a great teacher. A cypress tree. A dagger lying beside a skull. An avenue of trees bending before a destructive wind-storm, the rich golden leaves of autumn falling
thickly.
12-13 A hand with a prominent thumb is held out for study. A man, delving. A caduceus between two moons, one crescent and other gibbous. A volcano in active eruption devastating the country for miles around, whilst groups of peasants cling to their little homes.
13-14 A very old man facing a vast dark space to the northeast. A man, standing before an audience, with all the paraphernalia of a juggler. A bunch of spring flowers, over which is set a bright star which flashes and sparkles in a deep blue atmosphere. A crab climbing up an upright iron spear, above which is a circlet of seven stars.
14-15 In a sumptuous dining hall guests relax after partaking of a huge banquet. A pool of water. A dais on which is set a throne, on the cushion of which a dog is lying asleep. An auctioneer’s hammer lying on a heap of gold money and bank-notes.
15-16 A man studying a mandala in front of him, with the help of a very ancient book. This is a blank degree. A man like a Hercules or Samson standing over a slain lion. A young man standing on the top of a high mountain, the world stretched out below him, grasping a sword which comes from the heavens to his hand.
16-17 The unfoldment of multilevel potentialities issuing from an original germ. An artificial globe. A lightning flash. A band of merchants on camels traveling through the wilderness.
17-18 A hen scratching the ground to find nourishment for her progeny. A bull tossing a man with his horns. A cluster of faded exotics, very sweet and sickly to the smell. A hand grasping gold pieces, some of which are falling through the fingers.
18-19 A priest performing a marriage ceremony. A man with a very old-looking book before him. It has the appearance of some ancient record. An escutcheon containing a harp and a gauntlet. An old man sitting alone in semi-darkness with an old book before him, from which emanate bright rays of light.
19-20 Venetian gondoliers giving a serenade. A large building with walls of granite, having a dull or sombre appearance. A man dressed as a groom, riding upon a spirited horse. A wounded Bedouin mounted on his horse in the desert.
20-21 A famous singer is proving her virtuosity during an operatic performance. A king, an emperor, or commander on horse-back. A waning moon, amid a bank of clouds, dimly reveals a ship at sea, but all disabled. A man having jumped over a fence falls into a ditch on the other side of it.
21-22 A young woman awaiting a sailboat. A quantity of toys or common ornaments of glass and tinsel. A man asleep in the heat of the day; some implements beside him. A jeweled crown falling from a height into mud.
22-23 The meeting of a literary society. A burly man with an apron before him. A man standing upon a mountain with a staff in his hand. The setting sun shows his figure in relief. Fishermen pulling in their nets in calm weather.
23-24 A woman and two men castaways on a small island of the south seas. A small church, but highly ornate, having all the sacerdotal display usually met with in larger places of that class.
A strong castle on a high rock, and upon the battlements of the castle a flag with a crown upon it is is seen extended in the wind.
A graceful dancer smilingly receiving applause and floral tributes.
24-25 A wilful man is overshadowed by a descent of superior power. A very lofty pine tree. A horseman armed, moving across a desert towards some woody hills. The setting Sun reflected from the sea in such a manner that the reflected rays interlace with the solar rags.
25-26 Guests are reading in the library of a luxurious home. A gentleman with a number of ladies in a carriage. A meteor, or falling star. A marksman having failed to hit the bull’s-eye in eight shots strikes it in the ninth.
26-27 A violent storm in a canyon filled with expensive homes. A pear tree, loaded with large ripe fruit. A well-conditioned heifer standing to the plough. A moth circling round a flame.
27-28 An Indian girl introduces her white lover to her assembled tribe. Heaps of gold and silver coins. A beautiful scene of the country, wherein all the elements conspire to enchant the eye and hold the spirit in a mood of silent adoration. An old mill-wheel lying on the bank of a lily pond, with pretty creepers growing over it.
28-29 A Greek muse weighing newborn twins in golden scales. A man driving a bull, or an ox. A tethered horse, upon which a tiger is covertly approaching. A man in a prison cell, a ray of light flowing through the bars, on which a little bird stands singing.
29-30 A daughter of the American revolution. An acute triangle with a cross on the top. A young horse running across a field with a leading cord in trail; it lifts its head against the breeze and sniffs the air. A winged wheel flying across a green field.
